SAINT PHILOMENA

FEAST DAY:  AUGUST 11TH

In the Catacomb of Saint Priscilla in Rome excavotors on May 25th, 1802 found a shelf tomb sealed with slabs in a way that resembled tombs for martyrs.  The tomb had three tiles marked with these words:  LUMENA / PAXTE /CUMFI.  The words were apparently out of order and if you place the first inscripted tile last, the inscription would read: PAX  TECUM, FILUMENA, which means "Peace be with you, Philomena."  The tiles also had the symbols of a lily, arrows, and anchor and a lance, which would indicated virginity and martyrdom.  In the coffin there were the remains of a girl of about twelve or thirteen years of age along with a vial of her dried blood.

These findings were transferred to the Treasury of Rare Collection of Christian Antiquity in the Vatican and there was at that time no effort to establish that the remains belonged to a Saint.  In 1805, a priest named Don Francesco di Lucia, who was traveling to Rome, heard about the remains and requested them to be put in his village church at Mugnano del Cardinale, Italy.

When the remains were brought to the village church at Mugnano, graces, favors and miracles began to occur among the village people and in the nearby vicinity.  Miracles continued to occur year after year and in 1837, Pope Gregory XVI elevated Philomena to Sainthood.  The establishment of her sainthood was remarkable in that her sainthood was made without any other historical records other than her remains and  her special favors and miracles which she was granting  to people.

Saint John Vianney (the Cur of Ars), was very fond of Saint Philomena and encouraged his parishioners to pray to her and seek her intercession.  He had a shrine put into his church where people would go and pray in front of her statue for her intercession.  Also devoted to Saint Philomena were St. Peter Julian Eymard, St. Peter Chanel, St. Anthony Mary Claret, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, St. Euphrasia Pelletier, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, St. John Nepomucene Neumann, Blessed Anna Maria Taigi and Venerable Pauline Jaricot.

In 1961, the Vatican took Philomena off the Church Calendar and forbid devotion to her because they said that there was not enough evidence to declare her to be a Saint.  (But, it cannot be shown completely, that she is not a saint.)
